Britain, now officially known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, at one time controlled over one-fourth of the globe. Although the British Empire was seriously depleted beginning in the 20th century, the United Kingdom has remained a powerful global leader. It also remains a leading trading and financial power, with the third largest economy in Europe.
The form of government is a constitutional monarchy, lead by the reigning monarch and the Prime Minister, with a Parliament consisting of the House of Lord (consisting of life and hereditary peers and clergy) and the House of Commons (made of elected single-seat constituencies).
The United Kingdom has a population over 63 million. The youth population between the ages of 15 and 24 makes up a little over 12% of the population. There are 99 males for every 100 females in the country.
The population is majority white (87.2%) with notable minorities of African and Caribbean blacks and Asians (predominately Indian or Pakistani).
The national language is English, but there are recognized regional languages.
Almost 60% of the population self-identifies as Christian, while 25.7% claim no religion and another 7% did not specify a religion. Muslims make up 4.4% of the population, and Hindus make up a little over 1%.
The vast majority of Britons (82.3% of the population) live in urban areas. Major urban areas include (in order of population) London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Southampton/Portsmouth, and Liverpool.
Major concerns within British society, cited by numerous polls, surveys, and analysis, include immigration, the funding and management of the National Health Service (NHS), and the economy, including jobs and pay.
